News About The Netpreneur Program

1. THE STARS OF TELECOM SHINE OVER THE POTOMAC
Telecommunications is one of the most competitive industries for a netpreneur to survive and make it. Ever wonder how the stars of the telecom industry did it? The Netpreneur Program will give you the chance to get the facts from nationally known entrepreneurs who play a vital role in the future of the telecommunication revolution, and who still remember what it's like to start their business.

On October 21, the Morino Institute invites you to spend An Evening with the Stars of Telecom, the second in a series of Netpreneur Program CEO Forums. Our Stars are five local business founders or co-founders who together represent nearly every facet of the telecommunications industry. It is your time to ask Morgan O'Brien of Nextel Communications, Inc., John Puente of Orion Network Systems, Brian Thompson of LCI International, David Thompson of Orbital Sciences and Mark Warner of Columbia Capital Corporation how they made it to the top.

An Evening with the Stars will be held at the J.W. Marriott in Washington, DC with registration and a pre-reception beginning at 5:30 pm. The Program will begin at 7:00 pm. A crowd of more than 700 is expected, so be assured of your seat to star gaze by signing up now. For more information and to register, visit The Netpreneur Exchange. Admission is free.

2. ASK THE EXPERTS PR EVENT FILLS THE FORUM
On September 3, the Morino Institute sponsored a Netpreneur Program event, Ask The Experts: Maximizing Public Relations Efforts For The Start-Up Netpreneur, hosted by the Freedom Forum. As many of you will remember, we actually had to pull down the registration page within 48 hours because the room was almost immediately overbooked. Almost 200 people signed up before the cut-off, with 150 people attending. The feedback so far has been very encouraging, including comments like this one: "I've already used a half-dozen ideas I picked up from the speakers as well as the questions, which I also found especially instructive. There really were some terrific ideas presented there."

We're blushing, but not ready to quit there. If you couldn't make the session (or even if you could) check out the transcript which is available at the Netpreneur Exchange Web site. Then we hope you will join us in a new email-based discussion group on PR. The goal of the group is to provide a forum for asking and answering questions and exchanging views, recommendations and opinions on the practice of public relations for netpreneurs. A few of our friendly PR professionals and journalists have agreed to lurk around the edges and jump in from time to time-- that in addition, of course, to all of you who we hope will join and participate. Join the group at the Exchange, and we look forward to hearing from you.

3. NAVIGATING CYBERSPACE TAX POLICY
Ernst & Young LLP and Netpreneur Program cordially invite you to attend a breakfast seminar on "Navigating Cyberspace Tax Policy." The seminar will take place on Tuesday, September 23, from 8:00-10:00am at the Fairview Park Marriott, 3111 Fairview Park Drive, Falls Church, Virginia. The hotel is located at Exit 8 off 495, Route 50 East. There is no fee to attend and CPE credit is available. Income taxes, sales and use taxes and other taxes are very real in the virtual world of cyberspace. Much uncertainty exists as to how these taxes should be applied to the Internet and online services. Join us to learn more about this matter and how your company may be impacted. CFOs, Controllers, Directors of Tax, ISPs, content providers, telecommunications providers, enabling services and equipment providers will find this seminar to be informative and timely. The information provided will be useful to companies at all stages of development and may very well help corporate executives and netpreneurs alike avoid some unnecessary pitfalls and stumbling blocks in the future. For additional information or to reserve your seat:

4. WHO SAID AUGUST WAS SLOW IN DC?
August was the busiest month yet for the Netpreneur Program. Did you know that you are one of more than 2100 who read the Netpreneur News, and that we receive an average of 50 new subscribers weekly? Even more than the News, the number of visits to the Netpreneur Exchange, the Program's Web site, increased by 40% during the month of August compared to the number in July, and 426 new registrants joined the Web site. During August, the number one home state for site visitors was Virginia. Not a real surprise since we are a regional program, and many of the largest ISPs are based in Virginia. But, interestingly, the number two state was California which has been creeping up month after month. It is becoming apparent that the word is spreading about the DC region and the Netpreneur Program. We have received comments and requests for more information from places like Texas, Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, Chicago and even Japan, Italy and Indonesia!

3. BRINGING IPOS TO THE PEOPLE
Three recent announcements have laid the groundwork for expanding access to IPOs to the individual investor. Two are partnerships between established players. One is writing a whole new set of rules using the Internet.

On September 8, Charles Schwab & Co. and Hambrecht & Quist LLC announced an alliance to provide Schwab customers access to equity underwritings which are lead managed by Hambrecht. As a syndicate member and major bracket underwriter, Schwab would be allocated a portion of both initial and secondary offerings for its retail customers. Schwab also announced similar alliances with JP Morgan and Credit Suisse First Boston. The next day, the E*TRADE Group, Inc. and Robertson, Stephens & Company LLC signed a letter of intent to form a similar exclusive alliance to "use the Internet to empower customers through the use of sophisticated investment banking products and services, including new issues (initial and secondary public offerings)." The upshot is a retail face for investment banks where individual investors can get in on (or near) the ground floor of some IPOs. Probably not the last of such alliances and only the beginning of changes the Net is causing in the financial services industry. "On Wall Street across the board, there are new operating models that suggest you can serve both channels with similar product," Bob Emery, director of investment banking at Robertson, Stephens, told CMP's TechInvestor. "For the time being, at least, E-Trade may be serving mostly as a distribution channel for Robertson, Stephens, which said it will remain dedicated to its "core business and relationships with institutional investors." wrote TechInvestor's Kora McNaughton.

Meanwhile, online investment banking and brokerage firm, Wit Capital Corp., says all of this is still too elitist because, in many cases, you still have to be a preferred customer or minimums are involved. At Wit, individual investors can apply for a free membership that lets them invest in "IPOs underwritten by some of the nation's largest investment banking firms." The difference? Shares go at the offering price on a first come/first served basis without any preferred customer status. The catch? Wit has developed technology and strategies that will ensure Wit Capital Members buy and hold IPO shares allocated to them, including exclusion from future IPOs for people who flip and by imposing special fees on the sale or transfer of IPO stock. Buying and holding makes the investor more attractive to the corporate issuers. So where Schwab, E*TRADE and other discount brokers get access to IPO shares through alliances with underwriters, Wit says it gets participation from underwriting syndicates by being attractive to issuers. The first Wit IPOs will be available in about 30 days, says the company. BTW, Wit doesn't intend to stop there. It plans to provide online brokerage beginning in early October and will pioneer what the company calls "a new type of stock issue" called Public Venture Capital Offerings in which Wit will be the lead underwriter. In 1998, they plan to offer a Java-based Digital Stock Market, where members can trade Nasdaq stocks and listed shares directly with each other.
